WCT Joins Hands for A Day of Environmental Action in Conjunction with Earth Day 2024
27 April 2024

In celebration of Earth Day 2024 and alignment with WCT’s sustainability goal of “Protecting the Environment“, WCT had the privilege to participate in the Kutip Sampah Sambil Riadah (KUDAH) dan Penanaman Pokok Bakau event at the Hutan Simpan Kapar Tambahan, Jeram, Kuala Selangor on 27 April 2024 as a strategic partner.

Jointly organised by government agencies, the Department of Environment (“DOE”) Selangor and the Selangor Forestry Department, along with a local organisation, University of Mara UiTM Student Chapter Environment Friends Association (Rakan Alam Sekitar UiTM Student Chapter (“RAS UiTM SC”), the trash clean-up and mangrove planting event saw the participation of over 100 volunteers from WCT Holdings Berhad, Canon Opto Sdn Bhd and Samsung (M) Sdn Bhd.

The event started early in the morning with a spirited warm-up group exercise to energise the participants. The atmosphere was cheerful as the participants progressed to the cleanup site, where everyone worked tirelessly to restore and preserve the natural beauty of the area. The area was cleaned of plastic and other debris, returning it to what it should be.

Team WCT worked alongside other volunteers to clean up the forest reserve.

Team WCT all smiles, celebrating the achievement of having helped clean up the area.

The DOE Selangor's representative then delivered an opening speech. They emphasised the significance of environmental conservation and the role of such initiatives in promoting sustainability in alignment with the “Planet vs Plastics” theme for Earth Day 2024.

The highlight of the event was the collective effort to plant 1,000 mangrove trees as part of the Malaysian Government's initiative, 100 Million Trees Planting Campaign (‘Kempen Penanaman 100 Juta Pokok’). WCT Group contributed 600 trees out of the 1,000 trees, fulfilling WCT’s 2024 biodiversity target (Target: Replant 30% of felled trees or 500 trees per year, whichever is lower).

Participants were given a detailed briefing about the two different types of mangrove trees, Rhizophora apiculata (Bakau Minyak) and Rhizophora mucronata (Bakau Kurap) by the representative of Selangor Forestry Department, who also provided the plants and selected the planting site for rehabilitation.

Thank you to all WCT participants for volunteering in this meaningful effort. With the volunteers' teamwork and dedication, the Hutan Simpan Kapar Tambahan area was cleaned, and 1,000 mangrove trees were restored and rehabilitated.
