WCT Teams Up to Advance Brine Recovery Solutions in Bahrain
10 December 2024
KUALA LUMPUR 10 DECEMBER 2024 - WCT Holdings Bhd’s subsidiary, WCT Bahrain, has partnered with Tahliya Water Treatment WLL (TWT) and the Saudi Water Authority (SWA) to collaborate on brine recovery solutions for desalination plants in Bahrain.
The initiative, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), aims to reduce the environmental impact of desalination while producing valuable by-products, such as sodium chloride and other minerals, in support of Bahrain’s sustainability goals.
The project is designed to address the growing challenges of desalination processes, which are essential for meeting the region’s water needs but can have significant environmental consequences due to the disposal of brine waste.
By implementing advanced brine recovery technology, the partnership will help mitigate these impacts, while contributing to the local production of key resources that Bahrain currently imports.
The collaboration was formalised during the 3rd Innovation-Driven Water Sustainability Conference in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, held under the patronage of the Saudi Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture.
WCT Bahrain’s ED, Tony Chan Tuck Leong, TWT’s CEO Isa Al Doseri and SWA’s VP for Research and Innovative Projects Tariq G Alghaffari, were key signatories of the agreement, which underscores the importance of regional cooperation in driving sustainable water management solutions.
As part of the partnership, WCT Bahrain will take on the role of the design-and-build contractor, overseeing the engineering, procurement, and construction aspects of the project.
TWT will act as the plant owner, managing both the capital expenditures and operational management,
while SWA will provide strategic and technical advisory services to ensure the successful deployment of brine recovery technology.
The collaboration aims to enhance desalination efficiency, conserve energy and reduce Bahrain’s dependency on imported minerals, in line with the nation’s long-term sustainability objectives The initiative will benefit Bahrain’s existing desalination plants, enabling them to adopt more environmentally friendly and economically viable practices.
Before the official signing, senior leaders from SWA hosted a technical visit to the Jubail Water Desalination (JWD) Plant on November 20 2024, allowing representatives from WCT Bahrain, TWT and SWA to witness the application of various technologies within the plant’s pilot operations.
With a capacity of 1,036,000 m3/ day, JWD stands as the world’s largest desalination plant and a global leader in desalination research and innovation.
The strategic partnership highlights WCT Bahrain’s ongoing commitment to delivering impactful and transformative projects in Bahrain, as seen in its previous work, such as the Bahrain International Circuit and City Centre Bahrain.
Moreover, the project aligns with WCT Bahrain’s dedication to environmental, social, and governance principles and its role in supporting global sustainability goals through technological innovation in water management. — TMR
