KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- WCT Bhd, the engineering and construction division of WCT Holdings Bhd (WCT), has bagged the International Achievement Award at the Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) 2024 for its outstanding completion of the Lusail Development Project in Doha, Qatar.

WCT earned the award for successfully constructing and completing infrastructure and civil works for the 38 squarekilometre Commercial Boulevard within Lusail City, which the Lusail Real Estate Development Company commissioned.

Lusail City is a master-planned urban area that includes residential, entertainment, and commercial districts. It is also renowned for hosting the Lusail Stadium, one of the iconic venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

WCT Bhd’s comprehensive scope of work included constructing roads and underground carparks, installing wet and dry utilities as well as mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems for the carpark.

The company also carried out structural works and earthing below the raft foundations of four Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations.

Additionally, it managed the architectural, structural, and MEP works for four substations, alongside installing network and street lighting cables, demonstrating its expertise in delivering integrated infrastructure solutions.

WCT managing director (engineering and construction) Anthony Teoh said this achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of the entire team, demonstrating their ability to manage and deliver large-scale international projects that meet stringent quality and safety standards.

“Given the project scope, which involved multiple utility networks and underground concrete structures at varying depths, WCT adopted the innovative Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach to enhance sustainability.

WCT not only met but exceeded international standards, delivering the project on time despite the unique difficulties posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, climate and logistical issues, and the land, sea, and air blockade on Qatar imposed by the Arab League countries,” he told Bernama, recently.

He said the Lusail Development Project represents a cornerstone of Qatar’s vision to emerge as a global hub.

Looking ahead, he said WCT remains committed to pursuing excellence in future local and international projects.

Organised by the Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB), the MCIEA 2024 has recognised the achievements of 70 industry players, honouring project owners, contractors, consultants and projects which have demonstrated the elements of quality, safety and health, productivity and sustainability in their operations.

CIDB Malaysia chief executive Datuk Mohd Zaid Zakaria said the MCIEA awards are not just about celebrating success but also represent the strength, spirit, and relentless pursuit of excellence that define the industry.

“Over recent years, the sector has been overcoming obstacles, adapting to evolving requirements and implementing new technologies. The pandemic brought an unparalleled disruption, but it also brought opportunities to transform and reinvent.

“Today’s recipients took these challenges head-on and turned them into success stories that will inspire our industry for years to come,” he said. The MCIEA 2024 awards ceremony was graced by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi on Monday. Also present were its Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, Works Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Seri Azman Ibrahim and CIDB Malaysia chairman Yusuf Abd Wahab. – BERNAMA
